Singer and performer Lionel Richie’s career is still going strong at age 62. He has a recurring role on The Voice, he recently released a new album, and he is scheduled to be a judge on a show called Duets, among other projects. His career began in the 1960s and has spanned more than four decades.
Yet, the news has not all been good for Lionel Richie this year. According to CNN, the IRS has filed a tax lien against Mr. Richie for unpaid taxes. Mr. Richie reportedly owes the IRS about $1.1 million for unpaid income taxes from tax year 2010. The IRS lien was reportedly filed on April 2, 2013. If it is not handled immediately, then the government may take control of the property identified in the tax lien to satisfy the debt.
Mr. Richie has told the media, “I was recently made aware of the situation by my new team, and it's being handled immediately.” Mr. Richie does not have a reported history of problems with the IRS or with any other government agency.
A tax lien could affect a taxpayer’s life in significant ways. A lien could, for example, affect a taxpayer’s credit and influence the taxpayer’s ability to buy a car or a home. It could also be a matter of public record.
