A: Rarely.  Late night ads promising hot deals to settle for pennies on the dollar are all the rage on cable t.v. and radio.  Unfortunately, I have cleaned up more than my fair share of messes created by these national firms that over-promise and under-deliver.  

Fact is, there are alot of predatory outfits out there that are taking advantage of consumers in tough times.  This is why I routinely tell clients that they need the help of a local, licensed tax lawyer who can look them in the eye and tell them how it is. 

There are many factors that go into the planning stages of making a request for any collection alternative, including the offer-in-compromise program with the IRS. That process almost always begins with a request for the taxpayer's master tax file (or transcript) through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.  Any outfit that claims to be able to tell you that you are an offer candidate without looking at this valuable file is better suited to read your palm or guess your weight at a carnival.
